PERIMETERS

 

A perimeter is the measure of the distance around the outside of a closed figure.

We need to know the perimeter of a figure if we are going to build a fence around it. This tells us how much fencing to buy.

 

We can measure the perimeter by adding up the lengths of all the sides of the figure.

 

Here is an example:

 

The perimeter of this yard is 5 ft. + 8 ft. + 5 ft. + 8 ft. = 26 ft.

 

Here is another example:

 

The perimeter of this figure is 4 yds. + 4 yds. + 3 yds. + 7 yds. = 18 yds.
