PERIMETERS
A
perimeter is the measure of the distance around the outside of a closed
figure.
Here
are some samples of closed figures:

We need to know the perimeter of a figure if we are
going to build a fence around it. This tells us how much fencing to buy.
We
can measure the perimeter by adding up the lengths of all the sides of the
figure.
Here
is an example:

The
perimeter of this yard is 5 ft. + 8 ft. + 5 ft. + 8 ft. = 26 ft.
Here
is another example:

The
perimeter of this figure is 4 yds. + 4 yds. + 3 yds. + 7 yds. = 18 yds.
