Dividing Multiples of 10 By Another Multiple of 10

It’s easy to divide a number that is a multiple of 10 by another number that is a multiple of ten.

For any number that is divided by 10 or 100 or 1,000,  in both the numerator and the denominator, cross out the number of zeroes that are in the denominator. Then divide the remaining numbers.

Example:

Divide 7,400 by 200, or 7,400 / 200

There are 2 zeroes in the denominator 200. So cross out 2 zeroes in both the numerator and denominator.

We are left with 74 / 2.

The answer is 37.

Example: Divide 900 by 60, or 900 / 60

First, since there is only 1 zero in the denominator, we cross out 1 zero in both the numerator and the denominator.

We are left with:

90 / 6

The answer is: 15
