Multiplying By 10’s, 100’s, 1,000’s

It’s easy to multiply a number by the number 10, or any power of ten.

For any number that is multiplied by 10 or 100 or 1,000, just add the number of zeroes in the 10 number to the first number.

Example: Multiply 74 by 100. There are 2 zeroes in the number 100. So place two zeroes after the number 74. The answer is 7400, or 7,400 to write it correctly.

If both numbers have zeroes at the end of the number, multiply the part of each number that is not zero. Then add the total number of zeroes that are at the end of each number.

Example: Multiply 60 * 900.

First multiply 6 * 9 = 54.

Then add up the total number of zeroes. 1 in the first number and 2 in the second number, giving 3 zeroes.

Now place the 3 zeroes to the right of the answer from step 1.

54 000

The answer is 54,000
