Multiplying Decimals

 

 

You multiply decimal numbers the same way you multiply whole numbers with one additional rule:

 

Add the number of decimal places in each factor. This is the number of decimal places in the answer.

 

Line up each factor to the right. Do not line up the decimals!!!

 

 

Example: Multiply 3.4 x 28.76 =

See how we lined up each factor to the right?

Then we multiplied the two factors as though they were whole numbers.

Then we added the decimal places in each factor:  2 + 1 = 3

Then in the answer, we placed the decimal point 3 places from the right.

 

Remember: You need to write your numbers neatly!!!
