When a child says they are bad at maths

Almost nobody is bad at maths in general. They are stuck at a specific place, and the place is usually findable.

It is one of the few school sentences that adults tend to accept at face value. A child says they are bad at maths, and the reply is either reassurance or, worse, agreement in the form of a shared confession that neither parent was any good at it either.

It is nearly always a specific gap

Mathematics is unusually cumulative. A student who never firmly got place value will struggle with decimals years later, and the struggle will look like a decimals problem. A student shaky on multiplication facts will find fractions slow, and the slowness reads as difficulty with fractions. The visible topic is rarely where the gap is.

This is why the sentence feels true from the inside. Everything genuinely is hard, because the foundation under all of it has a hole in it.

Finding the gap

  • Go down a level, not sideways. If fractions are failing, check multiplication and division facts. If decimals are failing, check place value.
  • Use questions with immediate answers. A short quiz that says why an answer was wrong locates a gap faster than a worksheet marked next week.
  • Watch which wrong answer they choose. Consistently subtracting the smaller digit from the larger is a specific misunderstanding with a specific fix, not general weakness.

What to say instead

Not "you are good at maths", which the child knows is not evidence, but something narrower and true: "you were stuck on that yesterday and you just did it". Specific beats encouraging. And when the honest answer is that a topic is hard, saying so is fine. Hard is not the same as impossible, and children can tell the difference between the two long before they can explain it.
